Spanning over 410,000 hectares, this pristine peat-swamp forest ecosystem is a habitat for the critically endangered Southwest Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii) and other Bornean wildlife species. This conservation area is also a renowned Orangutan research and rehabilitation center that was established by Dr. Birute Galdikas in 1971. Besides being the research and rehabilitation center, Tanjung Puting National Park is also offering ecotourism activities that invites all people to learn about the orangutan conservation effort and adore its pristine nature. The tourists will be experiencing the traditional houseboat, going slowly over the Sekonyer River as the entrance gate to the national park. The most visited area is Camp Leakey, the first and oldest orangutan research center in Kalimantan. Currently, this national park is the most visited national park in Kalimantan by domestic and international tourists and also becoming an activity that boosts the local economy by preserving nature.
